Ryan Anderson Named Team MVP

Sophomore forward Ryan Anderson, who led the Pac-10 in scoring with 21.1 ppg, was named the Golden Bears' Most Valuable Player for the 2007-08 season at the team's annual banquet Wednesday night at the Claremont Resort & Spa.

This past year, Anderson was named a second-team All-American by The Sporting News and voted first-team All-Pac-10. A two-time conference Player of the Week, he scored in double figures in every game and reached the 20-point level 18 times. Anderson became the first player in school history to register at least 600 points and 300 rebounds in one year, finishing with 697 points and 328 boards. His two-year total of 1,236 points ranks 16th in the Cal career record book and is the school's highest total for a sophomore.

In addition to his scoring output, Anderson was third in the Pac-10 in both rebounding (9.9 rpg) and free throw shooting (86.9%) and sixth in three-point shooting (41.0%).

Other awards presented at the banquet:

Academic Achievement - David Liss
Most Improved Player - Patrick Christopher
Most Unselfish Player - Jordan Wilkes
Hustle Award - Jamal Boykin
Coaches' Award - Eric Vierneisel
Outstanding Freshman - Harper Kamp

Liss, a sophomore non-scholarship player majoring in sociology, saw action in 17 games, earning one start, and averaged 0.9 ppg.

An honorable mention All-Pac-10 choice, Christopher increased his output from 5.2 ppg as a freshman in 2006-07 to 15.2 ppg as a sophomore last year. He scored a career-best 26 points vs. Jackson State early in the season and had 11 20-point outings, second only to Anderson on the team.

Wilkes, also a sophomore, contributed 1.7 ppg and 1.2 rpg, while Boykin averaged 7.8 ppg and 3.8 rpg during his sophomore campaign.

Vierneisel completed his Cal career with his finest season as a Bear, chipping in 5.1 ppg and 2.6 rpg. He started 19 games and set career highs with 20 points and seven rebounds vs. Washington on March 1.

The Bears were 17-16 overall and 6-12 in the Pac-10 during the 2007-08 season, reaching the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.
