Cal sophomore Anderson will try NBA draft
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Cal sophomore forward Ryan Anderson, a first-team All-Pac-10 selection who led the league in scoring, announced Thursday he has made himself eligible for the 2008 NBA draft. He will not sign with an agent, leaving him the option of returning to Cal for his junior season.
Anderson, who averaged 21.1 points and 9.9 rebounds, set a school record for most points by a sophomore with 697. He also became the first Cal player to have 600 points and 300 rebounds (328) in a season.
"I am excited to have the chance to see where I stand in the eyes of NBA scouts," Anderson said in a news release. "This is a great opportunity for me to get out there and get feedback on my game and see what I need to work on to improve myself as a player. I am still attending classes, so this will not affect my standing at Cal; I will use the information I gain from this experience to make a more educated decision on my basketball future."
Anderson has until June 16 to withdraw his name from draft consideration, should he choose to do so. Until then, he can work out for NBA teams at his own expense. The 2008 draft will be held June 26 in New York.
