The Oklahoma City NBA Basketball Team: What Should Their Name Be?
The move of the Seattle Super Sonics has been complete. The Super Sonics will now be playing in Oklahoma City, although they will no longer be called the Super Sonics and I think we can agree that is a good thing. The new team name for the Oklahoma City basketball team has not been decided but they are down to four names. A team's name is very important. You don't want to be the team stuck with a lame name like the Minnesota Wild. The following names are the names being considered from the name that I think is the worst to the name that I think is the best.
Oklahoma City Thunder
No, no, no. Sports team names should in "s."
Sports team names should be some object that can be touched. Sports team names need to be something that can be turned into a mascot. The Thunder does not follow any of these rules. If the Oklahoma City basketball team is called the Thunder then it will go down in history with the Utah Jazz, Miami Heat and Minnesota Wild as the worst sports team names ever.
Oklahoma City Barons
Barons is a good name. Barons sounds pretty good. Barons is original. Barons has a good meaning. Barons can be made into a mascot. But the Barons is already the name of my local professional sports team. OK, so my local professional sports team is a Double A baseball team, but still it just wouldn't be right for anybody else to be called the Barons.
Oklahoma City Thunderbirds
OK. That is more like it. Oklahoma City took the Thunder name and added something to the end. Much better. The Oklahoma City Thunderbirds could definitely have a good mascot. I don't know what kind of Thunderbird Oklahoma City is going for but the mascot could be a mythological bird, a car, a train or a character from the Thunderbirds movie.
Oklahoma City Outlaws
Oklahoma City Outlaws is definitely the best choice out of the three. I like some alliteration in my sports team names, like Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies or New York Yankees (they would obviously be better as the Yew York Yankees though). Oklahoma City Outlaws is also a good name because Outlaws are menacing and you can make a mascot out of it. Plus when one of their players gets arrested, and it's only a matter of time before one does, then they can just say they're supposed to be Outlaws.
