California Strategy and Personnel
THE GOOD NEWS: Mike Montgomery has a winning reputation, and his Stanford teams didn't always include four-star studs but were successful as a sum-of-parts outfit. If Ryan Anderson comes back -- he entered the NBA draft but said he won't sign with an agent at first, leaving himself the option of returning for his senior season -- the Bears return four starters, including their top three scorers. They also welcome back junior Theo Robertson, their best wing defender, who sat out the season to allow a hip injury to heal. The recruiting class features explosive shooting guard D.J. Seeley, a top-50 prospect.
THE BAD NEWS: Cal needs to improve dramatically in a couple areas, and needs even more polish if Anderson stays in the NBA draft. The Bears must develop a defensive mindset after giving up points in bushels much of this season. They also need more efficient play at point guard, where Jerome Randle shows flashes of brilliance, but is mistake-prone and struggles to stop penetration by his opposite number.
KEY RETURNEES: Anderson (21.1 ppg, 9.9 rpg), guard Patrick Christopher (15.2 ppg) and Randle (11.8 ppg) combined to provide 48 points per game as sophomores. Forwards Jamal Boykin and Harper Kamp both made substantial contributions as first-year players.
ROSTER REPORT:
--Ryan Anderson, with 1,236 points in two seasons, ranks 16th on Cal's career scoring list. He announced on April 3 that he'd enter the NBA draft but will not hire an agent in case he decides to return for his senior season.
--Departing senior center DeVon Hardin finished his career ranked second all-time at Cal with 132 blocked shots.
--Jerome Randle had 18 points, three steals and three assists in the loss to Ohio State, but also five turnovers.
